Toneisha Colson # 0365905 Youth Leadership Today's youth still face many attitudinal challenges to self-empowerment. Both the problem and the solution begin at home with their parents. Leadership training must start from an early childhood, as these young adults learn to take gradual responsibility for their own decisions. Only through self-determination, can these youth eventually achieve leadership in their respective communities. In addition to parental guidance, society has responsibility to create opportunities for these young adults to exercise good leadership. We must focus on the practice of leadership rather than the theory. Young adults should be given the opportunity to practice what they learn, such as being responsible for designing, organizing, and implementing their own conferences. Yet for many youth leadership implies a broader involvement. We need to encourage youth to pursue their own interests, and help them integrate into their local communities. Ultimately, the establishment of leaders in all aspect s of society will eventually improve the lives of all youth and people. As great leaders it is time for young adults to carry on the torch. Are the youth of America ready to assume the responsibilities? Have they been properly prepared to become the new leaders of tomorrow? As a leader, I have met face-to-face with the best talent that our country has to offer, I have as a leader had the privilege of demonstrating exactly what leadership is. There is no doubt in my mind that they as youth possess the potential to be great leaders. Just look at many personal accomplishments of some youth, and it is clear that we have far exceeded the prior generation. However, my pride and optimism are tempered by the inconsistency in leadership development among youth. The development of leadership potential is a slow and gradual process that must begin from early childhood. Our own perception of self-worth is heavily influenced by the expectations of our parents. I have always understood fr om my parents' attitudes that they expected me to complete at the highest level of education. This in turn has given me the drive and determination to excel academically and professionally. I understand that my parents, and the parents of other youths, want to protect us from failure due to unrealistic expectations. However, we cannot achieve emotional maturity without overcoming hurts and disappointments. Rather than predetermining which objectives are realistic, it is more empowering for our parents to encourage us to explore our own limitations. As I began to make more of my own decisions, my parents constantly reminded me that they would be there to back me up. Nevertheless, they often stood back and allowed me to take the wrong turns and bang my head against the wall. I now Toneisha Colson # 036905 realize how very difficult this must have been for them. But it was far better for me to learn from my mistakes within the safe confines of childhood than in the less forgiving word of adulthood. As we mature and become more empowered by making our own decisions, it is time to look beyond ourselves into community leadership. Like any other skill, leadership is best achieved through a combination of desire and experience. You can teach leadership skills by conducting training seminars, but little will be learned unless there are also opportunities to gain leadership experience. Our primary objective should be to help these young leaders achieve prominence in all aspects of society. Some of the young leaders may choose to get involved but others will have more diverse aspirations. We need to encourage young persons to get involved with their local communities and eventually obtain positions of leadership. While working on this paper, I asked many of the great leaders if they f eel that the young adults of today are ready to carry on the struggle. The answer that continues to resonate with me was, when we look at you the younger generation, we often wonder if it has the necessary experiences to take on challenge. What we tend to forget, however, is that at the height of the civil rights movement in the 60's, it was the eighteen to twenty year-olds who led the marches and organized the bus rallies and boycotts. Perhaps then, the

Coca-Cola lifestyle Essays
Coca-Cola lifestyle Essays Coca-Cola lifestyle Paper Coca-Cola lifestyle Paper Now as I come to marvel at the simplicity and effectiveness of Coca-Colas television advertising and look in detail at ten particular shots from this advert I have already noticed a pattern in the companys marketing strategy. I have discovered that in advertisements, Coke entices and coerces you not only to choose their cola, but to make a lifestyle choice. They encourage you to choose the young, affluent, athletic lifestyle they deceptively persuade you into thinking you can get from a bottle of their cola, rather than anybody elses. I will now look at the television commercial for the same cleverly created images of the Coca-Cola lifestyle. The ad for Coke I observed consisted of twenty five shots, all very carefully scripted and produced. The sound track is loud, energetic and the beat is very fast. After watching the advert all the way through I felt refreshed and energised. The adverts up tempo music stuck in my mind and the lyrics left me in no doubt as to wether Coke is the Real Thing. I will examine in detail just ten of these shots because I feel this will be enough to give me a general overview into the Coke ad and an insight into how the individual scenes work together to produce one large, clear image of Coca-Cola. The first shot is of a darkly dressed dancer, who stands out against the red/pink background of this, the first shot, and the caption Dance appears at the bottom-left corner of the screen. The colours are the colours of the Coca-Cola logo and the caption was purposefully chosen because it epitomises and promotes everything Coke is about, youth, energy and fun. The camera angle of this shot happens to bemedium long. I will now look at the third shot in the series of twenty-five that compose the Coke television ad.Ã The man in this shot is wearing a leather jacket and jeans- casual clothing-standing on a subway station. He starts to dance, using quick, robust moves. He is quite young, almost certainly in his twenties, and there is a Coke vending machine in the background. This shot is telling us that if we drink Coke we will be happy, energetic and feel like dancing too. Coke have very successfully promoted youth and healthy living in this big close up shot. The next shot I will examine is of a woman and child in a field. This shot does not fit in with the others, as although it has a small child running in a field, it also has an older woman, possibly her grandmother, standing behind her. The main colour is yellow, to emphasise warmth and the child is smiling, showing how happy she is. In this shot it is clear that whilst emphasising youth and energy, Coke is also trying to communicate the more timeless appeal of its product. This is a medium close up shot. This shot is number seven in the series of twenty five and cleverly portrays youth with Cokes more timeless appeal. The shot shows bar staff going about their daily work. The staff are all dressed in white, and their shirts look fresh and clean. A young attractive woman, whilst working behind the bar, finds time for an impromptu twirl, showing how Coke can help you have fun in the workplace too. She and her associates stand out against the grey background of the bar in which they work. The uniforms they are wearing look old-fashioned, as if the bar were back in the 1950s era. This is not in keeping with the rest of the images in this advert which mostly show youth in the more recent years of Cokes production. However it does help to illustrate the more everlasting side of Coke. This is a close up shot of a woman drinking a bottle of Coca-Cola and smiling, showing Coke has satisfied her thirst. There is a very bright light shining on the womans face to show her expression clearly and making it a sharp contrast between the dark blue background and her enlightened face. This is telling us how we will smile too, just like the woman in the shot once we have tried Coke and also showing us how with Coca-Cola our lives can be happy too. This is shot nine, a long shot of four dancers in a warehouse. The background is black and there is a red light from above shining down on the dancers. I suspect red was chosen because it is the main colour of the Coca-Cola logo. The dancers move in synchronisation with each other and the music. The colour choice was deliberate and the Coca-Cola company want us to see how we too will dance when we have embarked upon the Coke lifestyle, and how we too will dance once basked in the colours of Coke. A man in a brown suit against the grey background of the American subway station features in this, a medium long shot. Again, the man is dancing energetically around using moves that show how Coke has inspired him to dance and show us the youthful and healthy lifestyle we can have with Coke.Ã In this close up shot all the dancers are wearing white costumes so they stand out from the grey background and so that the laser lights used would reflect easily on the uniforms and enable us to see all the bright colours as the dancers move individually in time to the music. In this shot Coke are promoting their youth and energy and giving the impression that if we drink Coke, we too will be filled with energy and feel the uncontrollable urge to dance. In this medium shot, a young woman dressed in skimpy underwear is dancing around a bathroom. Again, the main colours are warm, in this case yellow, used to communicate happiness and the girl in the shower room is dancing to the music of the commercial. Coca cola have ingeniously placed a parasol with red and white stripes, very similar to the stripes of the American flag, in the corner of the rest room to show that Coca-Cola is a patriotic drink and as much a part of America as the president himself. In this shot Coca-Cola have decided to promote sex and the American dream to help them sell their product.Ã This, the final shot is of a young woman with blonde hair, against a white background. The woman has a huge smile and the caption underneath her reads You cant beat the feeling!. This suggests that if you drink Coke you will be happy too. The Coca-Cola trademark features at the bottom of the screen just to remind us of the product we are being sold. After I have looked at both the magazine and television adverts, I have come to the conclusion that Coke does not only stress images of youthful energy and health to convince us to buy their merchandise, but also a more timeless appeal. Young and old images coexist in harmony and make sure that Coke is for all, whatever the age. The company has cleverly shown us images of youth, love and romance, healthy living, sex and the images of several favourable lifestyles, (college education, a life of abundance but not extravagance) and also managed to link Coca-Cola with all aspects of America as well as the rest of its global community, making it the worlds number one selling soft drink.

Finance Analysis of McDonalds Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Finance Analysis of McDonalds - Essay Example D. Main products and services: McDonald's menu concentrates on five main ingredients: beef, chicken, bread, potatoes and milk, which account for 255 million of food expenditure. The company's main menu lists its basic food offering: the Big Mac, which still exists as a major seller; other standard product names come from the McDonald's convention of adding a 'Mc' to a particular item. So, a chicken sandwich becomes a 'McChicken' sandwich and chicken nuggets become chicken 'McNuggets'. This idea has been extended to their dessert range, with the creation of the 'McFlurry' ice cream5 (biz/ed, 1996-2008). E. Geographic area of operations: McDonald's is one of only a handful of brands that command instant recognition in virtually every country of the world. McDonald's began with one restaurant in the US in 1955 and today there are more than 26,500 restaurants in over 119 countries, serving around 39 million people every day - making McDonald's by far the largest food service company in the world6 (McDonalds). The business is managed as distinct geographic segments: United States; Europe; Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa (APMEA); Latin America; and Canada. In addition, throughout this report we present a segment entitled "Corporate& Other" that includes corporate activities and non-McDonald's brands (e.g., Boston Market). The U.S. and Europe segments each account for approximately 35% of total revenues. France, Germany and the United Kingdom (U.K.), collectively, account for approximately 60% of Europe's revenues; and Australia, China and Japan (a 50%-owned affiliate accounted for under the equity method), collect ively, account for nearly 50% of APMEA's revenues. These six markets along with the U.S. and Canada are referred to as "major markets"... The paper describes the company's history from the beginning. It shows the full list of the products and services and gives the financial analysis of McDonalds. McDonalds is one of the worldââ¬â¢s largest food chain and a key player in the restaurant industry. The company regards itself as the leading global food service retailer. The company has got over 30,000 restaurants all across the globe and is serving more than 47 million people in almost 121 countries each day. As part of this paper, the financial analysis of McDonalds has been carried out. The various financial aspects like the companyââ¬â¢s sales and net profit, asset and capital structure, expense distribution have been observed and analyzed for a period starting from 2001 to 2006. Each of the above discussed calculation and analysis have been supported by a graphical representation. The overall performance of the company with respect to all these various calculations was very good except that there had been a dip in the overall sales of the company in the year 2002 which was eventually made up in the very next year. Also, ratio analysis of the firm has been done from diffe rent perspectives like liquidity, profitability, asset turnover, efficiency and market valuation etc, for two consecutive years i.e. 2005 and 2006. An important and yet notable figure with respect to the market valuation of the company is its price-earnings ration which actually exceeded the industry average in the year 2006 which clearly shows the efficiency of the firm in productive utilization of its resources.

What has happened to the canadian economy over the last two years Essay
What has happened to the canadian economy over the last two years - Essay Example Seeking to explain these question and others that deal with the first global economic crisis in the twenty-first century and the response of the Canadian government as well as the Bank of Canada to this crisis, this research paper will explain and evaluate the policies of both branches of government. Australia is presently doing well financially, as are a whole bunch of other countries which have been able to deal with the effects of global economic crisis while successfully managing their economies. As this project is being typed, the Canadian dollar is close to $0.97 USD, which remains high and is perceived by some as an indication that the Canadian economy is doing well. Is this the case? This question is explored below (CBC, 2009). On July 23rd, 2009, the Bank of Canada released its quarterly Monetary Policy Report and enthusiastically announced that the recession that had afflicted Canadian businesses and the Canadian economy since the start of the global credit crisis was ââ¬Å"overâ⬠. Showing that Canadian economic growth was slated to be 1.3% in the current fiscal quarter, the days of a shrinking economy were descried as a thing of the past. While unemployment continued to rise, Canadian growth was projected to be positive after three quarters of economic decline and Mark Carney, Bank of Canada governor announced to reporters that ââ¬Å"We are on track for the recovery both in Canada and globally,". Speculation that growth will continue through 2009 and 2010, leading to a striking gross national product growth rate of 4% by the middle of 2010, enthusiasm was the result of this mid-summer announcement. Optimistic forecasts by the Bank of Canada has assured the electorate of a 3+ growth rate by 2010; this is ahead of forecasts by the International Monetary Fund and some of the major banks in Canada including ScotiaBank, Royal Bank and the CIBC. What accounts for the positive announcement and the fact that the Canadian economy is expected

Demonstrative Communication Essay Example for Free
Demonstrative Communication Essay Communication is often defined as the transmission of sending and receiving messages; connecting with individuals through the exchange of messages, thoughts, speech, signals, behavior, or writing. Communication can be verbal or nonverbal, written or visual. Oral communication includes spoken words and writing dialogues. Not involving or using words of speech is known as nonverbal communication. Facial expressions, body posture, eye contact, or gestures are part of nonverbal communication. Written communication can be through e-mails, reports, articles and many other ways. Facial expressions are a form of demonstrative communication. Communicating includes different facial expressions, tone of voice, or body language to deliver the message. A smile is an example of a positive facial expression, and a frown will be viewed in a more negative manner. Some interpret a grin as arrogance, which obviously would have a negative effect. The audience could take this in the wrong manner and create an isolated situation. Depending on the subject that is being discussed it is up to the lecturer to bring out the right facial expressions. If the subject relies on a more serious matter, the lecturer should not frown but instead maintain a serious face to get the point across. If there is a sense of comedy in the discussion or presentation, the lecturer needs to maintain some laughter as well as smiling during the presentation. Body language is another form of demonstrative communication. Body language can push to be very successful in many situations including social interaction and communication with people. A negative type of body language would be someone crossing their arms. Even if the intention and words are still good, the body language over powers that and the audience still views this as a negative vibe. Another important and effective part of body language is eye contact. When lecturing to an audience, direct eye contact with the audience indicates confidence and a vast knowledge of the topic of discussion. Hand gestures and moving back and forth in front of an audience during a lecture can be helpful to keep the attention of the audience. These nonverbal forms of communication add to the message the lecturer is trying to get across. However, moving too much can cause a negative affect because it can cause a distraction. Nonverbal communication is very important to our communication process. Included in nonverbal communication are things such as facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture and even the tone of oneââ¬â¢s voice. During a lecture, the speaker will use different methods to get with the audience, playing a big role as well will be oneââ¬â¢s voice and how it is used to relay the message. One can change the tone and tempo of talking; and can connect with the audience more effectively. When we speak, other people can ââ¬Å"readâ⬠our voices in addition to listening to our words. These nonverbal speech sounds provide subtle but powerful clues into our true feelings and intentions. When speaking to an audience maintaining the focus of the group is important. Raising our voice when losing the attention of the audience is a technique used to emphasize a particular point during a lecture. When a speaker talks in a monotone voice there is a chance of quickly losing the attention of the group the lecturer is speaking too and can cause to miss important parts of the lecture. Demonstrative communication as a sender means showing and saying what we want them to hear. By saying to the audience that the lecturer needs them to listen better, as the lecturer is looking at the phone is like saying one thing and showing the audience another, proving the distractions are not good for either side. Also it would be important not to have a big smile on oneââ¬â¢s face or to look as if they are laughing. In contrast, by the lecturer telling the audience that they need them to listen better while looking them in the eye and being firm with the tone of voice and holding a straight and focused look, the lecturer is communicating to them via mouth, eyes, and tone of voice that the audience needs to listen and pay attention. Also during this communication, it would be good to expect feedback from the audience. This would show the audience that one is serious, and could show the lecturer if the audience is truly paying attention and show how well the audience will receive the information being communicated to them. The receiver would need to hold eye contact to show that they understand the information. In conclusion, creating the ability to understand and use nonverbal communication is very effective. Using body language to carry out positive feelings would help you express ones thought out to the public a little easier. Therefore, being able to communicate send and receive a massage thoroughly with the audience being able to understand. Using facial expressing such as body movement, eye contact is a very effective way to demonstrative communication. REFERENCES Cheesebro, T., Oââ¬â¢Connor, L., Rios, F. (2010). The Tragedy Of Edgar Allan Poe Essay -- essays research papers
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the leading figures of American literature. He is known as a poet and a critic, but is most famous as the first master of the short story form, especially tales of the mysterious and gruesome. In Poeââ¬â¢s poems, like his tales, his characters are tortured by nameless fears and longings. Today Poe is acclaimed as one of Americaââ¬â¢s greatest writers, but in his own unhappy lifetime he knew little but failure. Poe had an unstable family life. The insecure place he held at home interfered with his emotional stability. He was born as the son of actors. ââ¬Å"The two were not notably talented; they played minor roles in third-rate theatrical companies.â⬠(Buranalli 7) Between them they barely managed to make a living. Poe was the second of their three children. About the time the third child was born, the father died, or disappeared, and Mrs. Poe went to Richmond, Virginia with the two youngest children. The oldest child, William Henry, had been left in the care of his grandparents in Baltimore shortly after his birth. Mrs. Poe was overtaken by a fatal illness (tuberculosis). Devastated by the disease and worn out with the struggle to support her children, she died. Edgar, two years old, and the infant, Rosaline, were orphaned. Poe was taken into the home of John Allan, a wealthy merchant. His wife, Frances Allan, had no children and wanted to adopt Poe as her son. Mr. Allan was unwilling to commit himself to a step of such permanence. ââ¬Å"The acting profession was despised at the time and was even considered immoral.â⬠(Meyers 11) Mr. Allan thought the little son of actor parents was a questionable person to inherit his name and the fortune he was busy accumulating. He was however, willing to support the child, to please his wife. Family was of the greatest importance in Richmond, the place where Poe spent most of his boyhood. Poe felt the difference between the children at school and himself. He was not close to his (foster) father, like other boys were. Mr. Allanââ¬â¢s unwillingness to adopt him bothered him greatly. It hurt him that he was not wanted enough by his father to legally be his son. He acted out in fits of temper and rebellion. His family did not understand his reasoning for being so upset. Mr. Allan was a hardheaded businessman with no patience for Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"reasonlessâ⬠actions. ââ¬Å"He handled the situation by reminding the boy of his ââ¬Ëdisreput... ...ing the winter of 1846-47, when the couple had little food of fuel, Virginia reached the end of life. After Virginiaââ¬â¢s death Poe became even more depressed and temperamental. He slept with many women in a vain attempt to find comfort for the loss of his wife. In 1849 he re-met his high school sweetheart, Elmira. They became engaged. After making wedding plans, he set out for New York City from Richmond, but disappeared in Baltimore. He was found five days after he disappeared very near death. He died without regaining full consciousness, four days later on October 7, 1849, ten days before the date he had set for his wedding. à à à à à Poeââ¬â¢s life was indeed marked by misery and tragedy. He was abandon by his father, lived in poverty as a writer, and suffered the loss of many loved ones. On the other hand, maybe it was his dreary life that caused him to escape into the imaginative fantasy world that became his writerââ¬â¢s playground. Looking at it from that perspective, perhaps his unfortunate personal life was the springboard for his success as a writer. Poe did, no matter, have great talent and will forever be remembered for his brilliance in American literature.

The Man Who Loved Flowers Essay
Why do people experience like killing another human being? And what are they stating themselves to do it okay? In our universe today there are a batch of slayings. Many of the slayers are convicted for their offenses so there are besides some of them who manage to steal off from the constabulary and the probe but so come the hardest sentence of them all. You will hold to populate whit the guilt of what you have done for the remainder of your life because you can non state anybody. The chief character in the narrative ââ¬Å"The Man Who Loves Flowersâ⬠by Stephen King from 1977. Acts of the Apostless like it is no large trade possibly his greatest sorrow is that he will ne'er see his one true love. Norma. once more. The chief character is a immature adult male. who appears to be in love. He wears a Grey suit and a tie that is pulled down a small. His eyes are light blue and his hair is brown and cut short. He is apparent looking. but because he is in love. people on the street think he is beautiful. We are told he is on his manner to run into his miss Norma. and it all sounds really romantic. In the get downing the narrative is sweet. it is truly romantic. Particularly in the line ââ¬Å"The air was soft and beautiful. the sky was darkening by slow grades from bluish to the composure and lovely violet of duskâ⬠( p. 175. ll. 2-4 ) In this sentence there is a complete love narrative. and you expect something lovely to go on subsequently in the narrative. There are told about all those small stores. and all those happy people. the ground there are giving. is that it is spring clip and everyone is in love. But the narrative does non go on that manner in the line ââ¬Å"It was acquiring darker now â⬠¦ could he hold been mistaken? â⬠( p. 179. ll. 41-42 ) the narrative is wholly barren of painting words. and beautiful scenes. He has gone into a narrow lane with refuse tins to run into whit his girlfriend whom he brings flowers. One starts to fell the creeps. and you know the narrative can non stop good. Possibly the chief character is schizophrenic in the line ââ¬Å"His name was love. and he walked these dark streets because Norma was waiting for him. And he would happen him. Some twenty-four hours soonâ⬠( p. 180. ll. 24-25 ) this line is from merely after he killed the immature miss that looked like Norma but he does non care that he had merely taken another life. He is merely looking frontward to when he is traveling to run into his dead girlfriend. whom he still thinks he loves. He knows it is incorrect because when he kills her he makes certain that she does non shout. and he does it in a dark back street so no 1 knows or sees it. It truly is like the chief character has to personalities. one that is bright and in love with his dream miss Norma. the miss he hopes to run into shortly. it is the 1 he shows to the remainder of the universe and it makes everybody believe he is beautiful. The other is dark. the personality of a liquidator who kills merely because the miss he frightens screams. like Norma did when she was killed. in the same back street. The rubric of the narrative is The Man Who Loved Flowers. which when you read it makes certain that one puts peculiar attending to the florist and you think about the flower bouquet the whole clip. and particularly in the line ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the spill of flowers fell out of his manus. the spill spilled and broke unfastened. sloping ruddy. white. and xanthous tea roses beside the bent rubbish cansâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ( p. 180. ll. 8-10 ) . where you take notice to the tea roses that seems so out of topographic point. in the dark back street with a consecutive slayer. It is opposite to the beginning where the roses seem so absolutely in topographic point with a happy adult male there is on his manner to run into his girlfriend. The flowers in this narrative highlights the passage from beautiful spring eventide where you could believe a adult male in love would by his girlfriend flowers. to a dark back street with refuse tins where 1 could ne'er conceive of a pretty corsage. Possibly the chief character. who calls himself love. putting to deaths merely to experience some exhilaration in his life once more and he tells himself that it is O.K. because he is merely looking for Norma. whom he will happen someday. finally.
